On this day in 2004: British student Tom Hurndall dies from his wounds after being shot directly in the head by an Israeli sniper for attempting to carry Palestinian children out of the line of fire

Hurndall was unarmed and wearing the internationally recognized peaceworker’s fluorescent orange jacket. He was struck down on 11 April 2003 and never regained consciousness. He died nine months later at a London hospital on 13 January 2004.

The sniper who pulled the trigger, an award-winning marksman whose rifle had telescopic sight, admitted that a policy of shooting at unarmed civilians existed at the time.

If you thought shooting at unarmed civilians and shooting near children in the first place fully shows the true nature of Israel, you’d be wrong. There was a huge cover-up attempt by the IDF and the Israeli government. That should be noted, and that is normal of them (read: Rachel Corrie, for example). Instead of trying to bring the soldier to justice, as usual, they lied and lied and lied and lied until they finally had to admit to this murder. 

One of the most amazing lies was claiming that the security camera didn’t catch the shooting on tape because it was facing toward the direction of Egypt — not into Gaza. His mother replied to the IDF with something like “You’re saying your security camera was facing Egypt — who you’ve been at peace with for decades — instead of Gaza, who you’re at constant war with?”

Also, I don’t think anybody believes Israel’s policy of shooting at unarmed civilians has stopped. Remember Mustafa Tamimi, and many before him.
